Ohio Officials Warn of Rising Scams Targeting SNAP EBT Cards

Local and state agencies are alerting residents to a growing number of scams targeting Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) Electronic Benefit Transfer (EBT) cards. Officials are urging cardholders to stay vigilant, protect their benefits, and report any suspicious activity immediately.

Scammers are using a range of tactics—from phishing text messages and phone calls to card skimming devices placed at retail locations—to steal benefits from

unsuspecting recipients. These scams can drain vital resources from families who rely on SNAP to meet basic nutritional needs.

To safeguard benefits, users are encouraged to:

• Regularly monitor account balances and transaction history
• Change PINs frequently and avoid using easily guessed numbers
• Be cautious of unsolicited messages asking for EBT card information
• Inspect card readers and ATMs for signs of tampering before use
