Ohio Department of Job and Family Services Warns SNAP Recipients of EBT Card Skimming Fraud

The Ohio Department of Job and Family Services (ODJFS) is alerting SNAP recipients about a growing threat of EBT card skimming fraud. Criminals are installing skimming devices on store card readers to steal card and PIN information, potentially leaving recipients without access to their benefits.

How to Spot a Skimmer
​Card skimming devices are often disguised to blend in with point-of-sale systems. Be vigilant and look for:

• Loose or protruding card readers
• Pinhole cameras aimed at keypads
• Keypads that appear raised or show signs of glue or tape

Before using a card reader, check for these signs and report suspicious equipment to store management.

Tips to Protect Your Benefits

1. Keep Your PIN Private:
   1. ​Never share your card or PIN numbers through email, text, or phone.
2. Monitor Transactions:
   1. Use the ConnectEBT app to track transactions and lock your card when not in use.
   2. Regularly check your card statements for unusual activity.
3. Avoid Sharing Card Images:
   1. Never send pictures of your EBT card to anyone, and avoid using unofficial apps.
4. Report Misuse Immediately:
   1. If fraud occurs, contact your local County Job and Family Services office and customer service at 866-386-3071.
