The Madison County Prevention Youth Ambassadors (MCPYA), in collaboration with Madison County Public Health, the City of London, and other community partners, are planting the seeds for a healthier and more connected future through the launch of their “Community Unity Garden.”

Located at 20 S Walnut St., beside the London City Hall bus lot, the garden will run from August 18 through October 13 and will be open daily from sunrise to sunset. All ages are welcome to participate, though children 13 and under must be accompanied by a parent or guardian.
The garden is more than just a green space — it’s a youth-led initiative designed to address pressing issues facing Madison County residents, from food insecurity to mental health challenges. MCPYA, a group of students from across the county, created the garden project as a way to foster community, educate peers, and promote both physical and emotional wellness.

A Mission Rooted in Health and Hope
The goals of the Community Unity Garden are twofold:
  1. Promoting Healthy Eating – The garden will offer interactive opportunities for youth and adults to learn about healthy food choices, with a focus on the benefits of fresh, organic produce. MCPYA members plan to use the space to educate participants about nutrition and the risks associated with processed foods, while also providing free access to the fruits and vegetables grown onsite.
  2. Building Community and Mental Wellness – Gardening offers therapeutic benefits, from stress reduction to increased mindfulness. Organizers hope the project will inspire more community members to get outdoors, reconnect with nature, and engage with one another in a positive, hands-on way. Produce harvested from the garden will be donated to local food pantries, including The Help House, and offered directly to families in need.

“This garden belongs to the community,” said MCPYA organizer Belon Hill. “It’s about more than growing vegetables — it’s about growing stronger relationships, healthier habits, and a shared sense of purpose.”

How to Get Involved
MCPYA is currently seeking volunteers, sponsors, and community partners. Anyone interested in contributing time, supplies, or monetary donations is encouraged to contact Belon Hill at  [email protected]  or Larry Newton at  [email protected].

In-kind or financial supporters will be recognized with their name on a commemorative plaque displayed in the garden and featured on promotional materials throughout the growing season.
