During the competition, participants completed a written exam, solved math problems related to food science, and demonstrated knowledge of general food management practices. Members also participated in an equipment identification portion and a triangle test, where they were required to identify which food product differed from others based on brand or formulation. In addition, teams completed a product development activity that required them to design a food product and explain all aspects involved, including production, marketing, and safety considerations.
The first London FFA team consisted of Hailey Ballah, Alaina Tate, Justin Saylers, and Lane Cremeens. This team earned a 2nd-place finish, qualifying them to advance to the district contest, as the top three teams moved on. A second London FFA team included Emma Boggs, Jennifer Walls, and Kyler Gillespie, who also gained valuable experience competing at the sub-district level. London FFA member Hailey Ballah said, “The Food Science contest helped us better understand how science and math are used in the food industry. Working together on the product development portion was a great experience, and we’re excited to move on to districts.” The Food Science Career Development Event supports London FFA’s mission of preparing members for careers in agriculture, food science, and related industries. The chapter looks forward to continuing its success at the upcoming district competition. Not receiving our content regularly?
