Celebrating a Legacy: Mike Mast Retires After 32 Years of Service

After more than three decades of dedicated service, Mike Mast will retire from the Madison County Board of Developmental Disabilities (MCBDD) on July 31, 2025. Mike’s career, which began on February 1, 1993, is defined by compassion, leadership, and an unwavering commitment to individuals with developmental disabilities in Madison County.

Mike began as a Contract Services Manager, later serving as a School Age Teacher, Preschool Teacher, and eventually Director of Student Services. Most recently, he contributed in the area of SSA / Business Solutions & Technology.

While his career included many roles, Mike says his favorite was his 12 years as a Preschool Teacher. “I’m still a big kid at heart, so being around preschoolers kept me feeling young,” he shared. One of his most beloved memories? The legendary end-of-year food fight featuring mashed potatoes, oatmeal, and baked beans — a fun and messy tradition celebrating learning and laughter.

Mike's influence extended far beyond the classroom. He volunteered as a Special Olympics coach, leading basketball and flag football teams and participating as a Unified athlete in softball and basketball. During summer breaks, he worked as a job coach, helping students explore employment opportunities in the community.

A West Jefferson High School Class of 1983 graduate, Mike was an All-Ohio football player and member of the 1982 State Championship Team. He earned his Bachelor of Science in Education from Urbana University and later received his Intervention Specialist license from The Ohio State University. He is a four-time recipient of the Staff Appreciation Award.

Retirement for Mike doesn’t mean slowing down. He plans to:

• Travel, including a trip to visit his son in South Korea
• Continue running his mowing business
• Spend time with friends and family
• And most importantly — enjoy life
