Beware: These Common Scams Are Costing People Their Hard-Earned Money

In today’s fast-paced, digital world, scams are becoming more sophisticated—and more common. From slick phone calls to sneaky text messages, scammers are constantly evolving their tactics to trick unsuspecting individuals into handing over their money or personal information. Here's a breakdown of the most common scams to watch out for, and tips to protect yourself and your loved ones.

1. Imposter Scams
These scams involve someone pretending to be a trusted person or official. Common examples include:
  • IRS or Social Security Scams: Scammers claim you owe taxes or your benefits are in jeopardy, often threatening arrest if you don’t pay immediately.
  • Grandparent Scams: The caller pretends to be a grandchild in trouble, needing money wired fast.
  • Utility Company Scams: Callers demand immediate payment or your services will be shut off.

Red Flag: Any demand for immediate payment via gift cards, wire transfers, or cryptocurrency is a major warning sign.

2. Online Shopping Scams
Scammers set up fake websites or social media ads offering popular items at deep discounts. Once you pay, the product never arrives—or you receive a cheap knockoff.

Red Flag: If a deal seems too good to be true, it probably is. Stick to well-known retailers and check reviews.

3. Phishing Emails and Texts

These messages appear to be from legitimate companies—banks, delivery services, or even your employer—and ask you to click a link or provide personal information.

Red Flag:
Look closely at the sender’s email address or phone number. Often there are small misspellings or unusual formatting.

4. Tech Support Scams

A pop-up or phone call claims your computer is infected with a virus. The scammer offers to “fix it” if you allow remote access or pay a fee.

Red Flag:
Legitimate companies like Microsoft or Apple will never call you out of the blue about a virus.

5. Romance Scams

Scammers build online relationships, often over weeks or months, then create a fake emergency and ask for money.

Red Flag:
They avoid video chats, have elaborate excuses, or quickly move conversations to private platforms.

6. Lottery or Prize Scams

You’re told you’ve won a prize or sweepstakes—but you need to pay a fee or taxes to claim it.

Red Flag: You should never have to pay to receive a legitimate prize.

How to Stay Safe:
  • Slow down and verify. Scammers create urgency to stop you from thinking clearly.
  • Don't share personal info. Especially over the phone or in response to an unsolicited message.
  • Use two-factor authentication. Add extra security to your accounts.
  • Report scams. Contact the FTC at reportfraud.ftc.gov or your local law enforcement.

Scams can happen to anyone. Talking openly about them with family, friends, and neighbors can help everyone stay one step ahead.
